Some filters don t belong in either the corrective or destructive camp. Take Filter Video NTSC Colors, for example, and Filter Other Offset. Both are examples of commands that probably don t belong in the Filter menu (maybe the Image Adjustments menu would have been a better choice), and you may or may not be excited about their results. The NTSC Colors filter modifies the colors in your RGB or Lab image for transfer to videotape. Vivid reds and blues that might otherwise prove very unstable and bleed into their neighbors are curtailed, as are pure white and black. The problem with this function is that it s not an independent color space; it s a dialog box-less filter (meaning you can t control it) that changes your colors and is finished with them. If you edit the colors after choosing the command, you may very well reintroduce colors that are incompatible with NTSC devices and therefore warrant a second application of the filter. Conversion to NTSC another light-based system isn t as risky as conversion to CMYK pigments, but you may wish you could have better results than this filter gives you. The Offset command moves an image a specified number of pixels. Why wasn t it covered in 8 with the other movement options Because the command moves the image inside the selection outline while keeping the selection outline itself stationary. It s as if you had pasted the entire image into the selection outline and were now moving it around. The command is a favorite among fans of channel operations, a topic covered in 4. You can duplicate an image, offset the entire duplicate by a few pixels, and then mix the duplicate and original to create highlight or shadow effects.

One of the latest developments in mixing desk technology has been the addition of USB and FireWire outputs. These new outputs enable you to connect the mixing desk directly to your workstation, without having to use an external audio interface or a soundcard. These are incredibly handy, because you ll have one less piece of equipment to buy (or worry about). Many mixing desk manufacturers are coming out with USB and FireWire models. In general, the FireWire models are slightly more expensive, because they enable higher sampling rates and bit depths. A couple of models are illustrated in Figure 5.9.

Every dimension has several components. The dimension text states how big the object is. The dimension line holds the dimension text. The dimension text should be offset from the dimension line by .625 mm or 1/16 inch. The extension line extends from the object to the dimension line. The extension line is offset by .625mm or 1/16 inch from the part itself and should extend 1.25mm or 1/8 inch past the dimension line. These measurements are universal drafting standards and must be maintained in computer-aided drafting as well as in manual drafting.

You are probably familiar with wizards from other software products. A wizard contains a series of forms that prompt you for information that it uses to create something for you. In many other products, wizards are used to gather information and generate code for you, which you subsequently have to understand and maintain. Oracle9iAS Portal s wizards do generate code under the covers, but you never have to see or understand the code it generates. Oracle9iAS Portal is what is called a declarative environment. This means that the process of development is no more than the process of declaring the values for a series of parameters. You don t have to write code. Even more importantly, you don t have to debug and maintain code. If you want to change the way an Oracle9iAS Portal component operates, simply change the declared parameters. After you summon it, there may be some pages that appear before you enter the actual Oracle9iAS Portal wizard, but you can always tell when you are in a wizard by a few common user interface conventions, as displayed in Figure 3-26.
